Honestly, I figured I would be writing a blog about the victorious return of MotoGP legend Marc Marquez earlier than yesterday’s 8th 2021 round, the Liqui Moly Grand Prix Deutschland. The 28-year-old, eight-time World Champ Marquez has been mostly out of action since the completion of his dominant 2019 season for the factory Repsol-Honda squad.

As the Canadian Superbike Championships awaits the chance to start its 2021 season – following several pandemic-related delays – it seems like a good time to have a look back through CSBK National Road race history. Our focus is ten years ago, in 2011, when the series was still struggling to deal with the fallout from the financial melt down that started late in 2008. There were far fewer opportunities for Canadian racers ten years ago, certainly when compared to the boom years of the decade previous.

The Motul FIM Superbike World Championship opened with the delayed Pirelli MotorLand Aragon round last weekend, where Kawasaki’s Jonathan Rea scored a historic milestone. In the opening, 18 lap race, Northern Ireland’s Rea lead flag-to-flag and won by almost four seconds, his 100th series win. Next best is Brit Carl Fogarty, Ducati’s 1990s hero, with 59 victories.

Exactly forty years ago – May 3, 1981 – marked a significant day in the history of motorcycle competition in Canada. This is the anniversary of the first event staged at Shannonville Motorsport Park by the new sanctioning body RACE, or Roadracing Association Canada East, as the group was then known.

Given our 1950s and ‘60s history of racing on old, frequently abandoned airfields across the country, this should come as no surprise. In the early 1970s, motorcycle roadracing was undergoing a growth period, largely due to the development of reasonably priced, sporty Japanese machinery.
