This past weekend at Shannonville Motorsport Park, the Super Series took on the Nelson track for the first time in two years and created a historical moment during one of the most sweltering weeks of August.
With over fifty entrants registered to participate in eleven classes, the weekend was already set to be a busy and exciting Round 2 of the 2021 Super Series Championship.
Saturday’s weather was clear and the temperature hit the mid 30s, creating ideal track conditions to go out and run fast laps. The 1.8 km historic Nelson layout saw something quite exceptional with a total of four track records being broken over the course of the weekend, with one record being broken twice in two days.
The first outstanding time was set by Ryan Vanderputten during the Lightweight Production qualifying session of Saturday morning with a lap time of 1.00.062. Ryan was then breaking his second lap record this year, setting the tone for the weekend and proudly revealing his skills for speed. His first lap record happened in July during Round 1 on the Long Track with 1.59.366.
As the day went on, Mike Raniowski and Drew Weber respectively won the opening race in PRO/AM Sportbike. Chris Fehr took the checkered flags in the Lightweight Sportsman while the Novice rider Jordan Decarie exhibit his talent once again and claimed the Novice class victory. In Heavyweight Sportsman, Drew Weber took the top step of the podium and Alex Radecki won in Lightweight Superbike. Russ Miller went on to steal the sidecar victory away from Michael Vinton, while Eli Daccache and Radecki scored victories in the PRO/AM Superbike divisions. The final race of the day went to Eli Daccache, the rider of bike No. 1 claimed victory in the Sprint Cup class by a margin of victory standing at 36.779 seconds over Dan Lewczuk.
Sunday saw very slightly cooler temperatures and incomparable action. The second Nelson Lap Record fell during the Novice class race with a busy field of 14 riders competing against each other only for the second time in 2021. The remarkable time of 57.571 was set by Jordan Decarie sweeping the weekend and succeeding over Bill McKay’s record of 57.986 previously set in 2009.
Later on, the Lightweight Production class saw its lap record broken once again. While Ryan Vanderputten bested Itsvan Hidvegi in race two by only a slim margin of 0.286 seconds, Hidvegi needed a win. In a race where both riders were near perfect, Hidvegi dethroned Vanderputten as the track record holder. The new record clocked in at 59.996, seeing Hidvegi as the first rider to complete a lap of the Nelson track under one minute in Lightweight Production.
The fourth track record of the weekend was set by no other than Eli Daccache during the Sprint Cup race at the end of the day, Sunday. After dominating the race and winning by 39.022 seconds, Daccache set a time of 53.611 seconds to claim the new Sprint Cup track record. The previous record was set by Jeff Williams in 2017. Daccache added another track record to his already long and impressive resume. He now owns the Sprint Cup track records on three Shannonville layouts; Nelson, Long and Pro.
Chris Fehr and Matthew Simpson opened their Sunday with wins in the PRO/AM Sportbike class. Fehr then went back-to-back, winning the very next race in Lightweight Sportsman less than 20 minutes later. Raniowski bested Colin Duncan to claim the Heavyweight Sportsman class while Itsvan Hidvegi took his first checkered flag of the weekend in Lightweight Superbike. Michael Vinton claimed his third Sidecar win of the season with Lewczuk and Daccache winning the PRO/AM Superbike event.
The 2021 Super Series season will conclude September 17-18, where the riders will take on the Pro track layout with plenty more records to break!
