It is hard to believe another race season is almost behind us. 2016 is definitely a year for me to forget in terms of racing. It started off strong back in January where I won an endurance race over in China. I was in good form and had a big year planned with both my BMW team on the roads in Europe and my Kawasaki Superbike team in Asia.

The final round of the Pan Delta China Superbike Championship will be held at Zhuhai International Circuit on September 14-16, and it looks to be nothing short of spectacular. The doubleheader will determine if reigning Superbike Champion Huang Shi-Zhao of Yes Yamaha will keep the crown or hand it over for the first time ever to someone from North America: Canadian Dan Kruger.

One of the perks of winning big races is that cool opportunities usually fall into your lap along the way. I was recently asked to test a Formula Renault open wheel car in China, and I gladly accepted. I have never followed car racing nor had any interest in racing cars. I always thought that driving a race car would be anti-climactic after the thrill of riding Superbikes.

I was lucky enough to be invited to help out at an Arlen Ness dealer event a few years back in China. Greenstar (licensee of the Arlen Ness brand for motorcycle leathers and riding gear) was one of my sponsors at the time. I was really looking forward to the event as Ruben Xaus, who was racing for Castrol Honda in World Superbike at the time, was also helping out. I had grown up following his career and I thought it would be cool to ride with him for a day, especially since we were both the 'Instructors' at this even. To be honest, at the time it would have been more fitting for me to be his student, but hey, I was going to take this opportunity. And if I had to ride over my head a little, then so be it.

I will never forget the first time I crashed while testing alone on the Zhuhai circuit in China. It had rained earlier in the day, but there was a dry line. I was on a fast lap but ran out onto the rumble strip coming out of a corner, and immediately high-sided (so much for traction control!!!). I wasn’t going fast, but I went straight up in the air and came straight back down.

Just about anyone who has thrown a leg over a race bike has most probably also experienced a crash or two. Crashing sucks! It is expensive, dangerous, and sometimes even embarrassing. Nobody that I know enjoys crashing… period!

Unfortunately, crashing is a reality in Superbike racing. It is a highly competitive sport and races are run in pretty much all weather conditions (well, not snow!). There are also mechanical failures, tire failures and sometimes, it happens in that split second when you lose your focus. That’s all it takes to find yourself sliding down the track.

Canadian Kruger Injured in Testing Crash

Less than a week after Brett McCormick's serious accident while racing in Europe, fellow Canadian Superbike racer Dan Kruger was injured in a crash during a private test session at Zhuhai International Circuit in China on Wednesday. While his injuries were not life threatening, Kruger was rushed to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with two broken ribs, a badly bruised lung, a broken bone in his wrist and multiple bruises. Original concerns of a broken sternum and more serious lung damage have been ruled out for the time being, although Kruger is en route to Shanghai to get a second opinion due to continued severe chest pain and to have his wrist set.
