BMW Motorrad is carrying out a global Technical Campaign, pertaining to the rear wheel carrier flange on all BMW R and K models produced between November 2003 and April 2011.

A total of 367.000 motorcycles are affected worldwide, with 5343 units affected in Canada.

Based on ongoing quality analyses, it was found that in the case of incorrectly executed maintenance work, excessive torque may be applied to the brake disc bolts or to the wheel nuts when changing wheels, contrary to the values specified in the BMW Motorrad repair instructions. Cracks and damage can occur in the wheel flange as a result of excessive tightening torques. BMW Motorrad has therefore decided to exchange the wheel flange with a more robust part as a precaution.

The technical campaign encompasses replacement of the aluminum wheel flange with a more robust steel unit and will be performed free of charge for all affected BMW R and K model owners.

BMW Motorrad Canada, in cooperation withTransport Canada will initiate an official recall relating to this technical campaign, and begin notifying owners of BMW R and K models in the coming weeks. We expect the recall to be posted on Transport Canada’s website later this week.
