Sunoco and competition accessory and services distributor Brooklin Cycle Racing of Pickering, Ont. have announced that Sunoco 260 GTX will serve as the spec fuel for the 2013 Mopar Canadian National Superbike Championship series. The feature Pro Superbike Championship will run exclusively on Sunoco 260 GTX fuel, and competitors will be required to purchase their supply at each National round from vendor Brooklin Cycle Racing.
For the five other National classes of CSBK competition, racers can choose to use the spec Sunoco 260 GTX gas supplied at each round, or go with regular pump fuel available from street vendors. BCR will offer spec fuel of this standard at the track, a 91 octane gas by Shell containing no ethanol.
These new guidelines will come into force starting at the opening round of the of the 2013 Mopar CSBK tour at Shannonville Motorsport Park June 7–9. Test fuel will be available prior to that date from Rob at Brooklin Cycle Racing at rob@brooklincycle.com, 905-831-7223. Currently the price is $4.50 CDN per liter of Sunoco 260 GTX, but that price is subject to adjustment based on supply.
Testing services will be provided by Series Event Staff to ensure that racers do not use fuels outside the described range of consumer products. Fuels that contain lead, as well as higher performance “brewed” options are not permitted.
“I think it is important for the Mopar CSBK series that we can provide a fair, stable playing field for all the racers, based on standards and equipment,” stated CSBK Boss Kevin Graham. “The fuel issue continues to be a major concern for everyone involved, and we want a fair, enforceable standard that is reasonable in terms of availability, performance and cost.”
Sunoco 260 GTX is an industry standard for competition use and has served as the spec fuel for the AMA Pro Superbike Championship in the U.S. since 2009. The decision to go with standardized fuel came about due to health and safety risks associated with the transport and handling of expensive, custom built “boutique” race fuels.
Longtime race supports Brooklin Cycle Racing (BCR) have also joined with Sunoco to sponsor the 2013 Sunoco Pro Rookie of the Year Award. At each round of the Mopar CSBK Superbike Championship, the top rookie Pro in the Feature race will receive a $500 cash prize bonus from BCR and Sunoco.
As well, points will be tabulated from each Pro Superbike round, and at the end of the season the Sunoco/Brooklin Cycle Racing Pro Rookie of the Year will be crowned. The presentation of the new honour for that winner will take place at the final Mopar CSBK National of 2013 at the famed Le Circuit Mont Tremblant in the Quebec Laurentians north of Montreal, August 25.
