The steamy hot weather persisted for most of the weekend at Shannonville Motorsport Park. Round 3 saw a return to the original Shannonville layout as a large grid of riders set records ablaze on the 1.8km Nelson Circuit.
Nelson International Raceway was the dream carved into the Canadian Shield by John Nelson, who ran his first motorcycle race on a cool Thanksgiving weekend in October of 1976. To this day, the Nelson Circuit remains as one of the busiest racing facilities in Canada.
In Pro Superbike action, it was Newcastle’s Eli Daccache, aboard his Yamaha R1, who jumped into a commanding lead and earned a runaway victory. After a race long battle with Kingston’s Chris Fehr, Pedro Souza took a well-earned second. In fourth was local racer Eros Mukja.
Tomas Casas continues atop the leader board taking another win in the Pro 600 class. Casas got an early lead and left the remaining combatants in a dogfight for second. The late challenge that was predicted by Cameron Walker never came to fruition when Walker ran off track, crashing heavily into the tire wall, ending his contest. “Take Mike for Granite” sponsored Mike Raniowski stepped out of the storm to finish second, with Chris Fehr taking the final step of the podium. In fourth was Sean Latta with Dave Buckland rounding out the top five.
In Superbike Depot Amateur Superbike racing, Craig Archer laid down a brilliant ride to take the win. In second was Jared Walker, just ahead of Ivan Babic, the Champion Cycle rider, in third. Fourth place finisher Todd Ferguson finished just ahead of Jamie Young who had to settle for fifth.
Craig Archer once again proved to be on form, winning the Amateur 600 Sportbike action. Todd Ferguson upped his game and took the second step of the podium, just ahead of Jared Walker. Jamie Young and Matthew Annable finished in fourth and fifth respectively.
In the popular Mopar Express lane Lightweight Production class, John Tavener took a healthy lead to the top step of the podium and set a new class record in doing so. Tavener posted a time of 1:01.011, shattering the old mark set by Tyler Moore. Moore was unable to defend the record because of a Friday practice crash that relegated him to spectator status for the remainder of the weekend. Kingston’s Steve Cole enjoyed a great ride to finish second while J.F. Cloutier also looked good in taking the final step of the podium. Youngster Matt Simpson had a good outing and finished fourth, with Alan Burns in fifth.
Matt Simpson was in top form winning the Lightweight Sportsman with a brilliant late race pass to take the win, after battling race long with J.F. Cloutier. While Simpson was enjoying his first RACE SuperSeries win, Cloutier had to settle for runner-up status as Simpson simply came out of nowhere to romp away to the checkered. Steve Cole took the final step of the podium, with Alan Burns in fifth. Belleville’s Todd Cleary had to settle for fifth, but still managed to set a new class record with a 1:02.286.
In Middleweight Masters racing, Belleville’s Mike Raniowski took a hard fought victory with Chris Fehr in hot pursuit. Dave Buckland finished in third, just ahead of Jose Azevedo who took fourth.
Other race winners include David Walker who won Heavyweight and Middleweight Masters, Hans van Sluewen who won Lightweight Twins, Josh Thomas who won the Lightweight Superbike event and Eli Daccache who won the Sprint Cup.
