SHANNONVILLE, Ont. – St-Hyacinthe, Que.’s Philippe Masse and Trevor Daley of Mississauga, Ont. were the winners of the Inside Motorcycle Amateur Sport Bike and Bazzaz Amateur Superbike national features, respectively, at Shannonville Motorsport Park on Sunday.
Riding the Racingphil.com / Pete’s Superbike Kawasaki ZX-6R, Masse was in the lead of the Sport Bike race when a red flag was thrown after seven of a scheduled 14 laps for a crash in turn one. Jean-Francois Aubin of St-Jerome, Que. placed second on the Ricky Bobby Racing Suzuki GSX-R600, 1.364 secs. behind Masse, and Falmouth, N.S.’s Austin Shaw-O’Leary finished third on his Dua Motorsport / GoLo Racing Honda CBR600RR.
In a wet Amateur Superbike race, Daley took the lead on lap two of 11 and rode smoothly to a 10.479-sec. victory on his One Speed / Riders Choice Suzuki GSX-R1000. Riley Dawe of Toronto was second on the Century 21 / Track Cuts Yamaha YZF-R6 and Masse completed the podium.
Masse had qualified second in the Sport Bike class but a poor start left him fourth at the end of the opening lap and he worked hard to get by Shaw-O’Leary, Aubin and finally Dawe by the end of the sixth lap. His efforts earned him the Performance Under Gear Performer of the Race Award.
“This has been a long time coming,” said Masse after his first career national victory. “Last year was a bit hard with injuries, and I lost a motor at the end of the season.”
The race was stopped when Eric Fiset of St-Constant, Que. crashed his Team Couturier Racing Suzuki GSX-R600 in turn one while lying seventh. He was not hurt in the fall.
Late afternoon rain shortened the Amateur Superbike race from 14 laps to 11, and led to a number of falls. Daley took the lead when pole qualifier Tim Robinson ran off the end of the backstraight on his Robinson Racing / Gym-Max BMW S1000RR on lap two. By lap five the Suzuki rider had a comfortable cushion and rode steadily for his first national victory.
“I rode my own race and just tried to play it smart,” said Daley, who picked up a $1000 contingency payback from Dua Motorsport as well as a prize pack from national series title sponsor Mopar.
The win was sweet justice for Daley, who had qualified on pole for this event last season only to fail to finish.
Among the frontrunners to run into trouble in the tricky conditions besides Robinson were Aubin, who fell while running second on lap five in an incident that also caught out Shaw-O’Leary. Alain Lefebvre also held second spot but he went down on lap seven, as did Hugo Fournier, who was fourth at the time.
There were no serious injuries in the crashes.

For the second day in a row Ryan Roche won the Honda CBR250R National Race Series round at Shannonville. The 17-year-old from Pickering, Ont. once again faced a tough challenge from 13-year-old Tomas Casas of Peterborough, Ont., and the runner-up finisher from Saturday took the lead on lap eight of the 10-lap race, only to fall in the hairpin on the final lap.
“Something told me he [Casas] was close, but I didn’t think he was that close,” said Roche, who ran in the Honda CBR125R Challenge in 2009. “I went as hard as I could in the last two corners because I thought he was still on me.”
As on Saturday, Stacey Nesbitt grabbed the holeshot but couldn’t hold off Roche or Casas on the backstraight and settled into a lonely third. That became second when Casas fell on the final lap and last year’s CBR125R champion crossed the line 15.228 secs. behind Roche.
“This gives us something to work on for the next round,” the St-Lazare, Que. racer said. “There’s still another eight races and a lot can happen. I’m not disappointed with the results but I thought I could stay with them. I wanted to try and get a better start today but the lights got me and I pulled a wheelie.”
Roche leads the Honda CBR250R standings with 108 points heading to the next pair of races at Autodrome St-Eustache July 7-8. Nesbitt is second with 80 points and Calgary’s Sean Smith third with 71.
Costa Mouzouris of Inside Motorcycles also repeated as winner of the Media Challenge and placed third overall, although he spent the race battling with the National Post’s David Booth before Booth crashed in turn three on the final lap, suffering a concussion.
Fourth overall and second in the Media Challenge was Neil Graham of Cycle Canada, with Smith fifth overall.
