Located in British Columbia’s southern Okanagan Valley, Penticton has long been a vacation destination thanks to its mild climate and natural surroundings. Most recently, thanks to the dedicated marketing efforts of the Visit Penticton tourism team, motorcyclists have added this city to their list of must-visit destinations.

For those of you who have not yet experienced everything that Penticton has to offer, here is a look at my top ten list of reasons to visit.

No. 1: World class collection of highways, roads and twisties
Surrounded by lakes, mountains and valleys, Penticton’s natural landscape led to the creation of highways and roads that wind their way throughout the region. Whether you are in search of leisurely afternoon cruise with a group of friends or looking to challenge your skills on stretches of corners that seem to go on forever, Penticton is ready to deliver.

Lots of corners combined with spectacular views makes for a perfect day of riding.

No. 2: Dual sport heaven
The same natural geography that serves as the backdrop to amazing highways also is home to some of the best adventure riding on the planet. For every mile of asphalt there are multiple miles of back roads, dual track and single track taking your further into the heart of the Okanagan Valley and beyond.

No. 3: Hidden gems at every turn
On-road or off-road, the Penticton region is full of surprises awaiting you around the corner. Wildlife preservation parks and centres, roadside shops and even the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory research facility, which is home to the John A. Galt Telescope. Keep your camera and phone handy as you never know when the next photo opportunity will happen.

At 26 metres across, the dish of the John A. Galt telescope is must-see experience.

No. 4: Views for days
Sometimes you need to slow down and take in the views. Situated between the Okanagan Lake to the north of the city and Skaha Lake to the south, viewpoints abound as roads follow the lake shores. Head away from the lakes and up into the surrounding hills and mountains and the drama increases as the elevation gives way to views that stretch the length of the valley floor.

No. 5: Area 27
Looking to take your riding to the next level? Nearby Oliver, BC is home to one of Canada’s leading racetracks. The five-kilometre road course designed by Formula 1 legend Jacques Villeneuve features 16 corners, dramatic changes in elevation and plays host to motorcycle track days throughout the season. Prefer to be a spectator? There are multiple viewing areas that can be accessed just outside the main gates.

No. 6: Surrounding towns
Of course, a day in the saddle is always better when there are interesting places to visit. Starting out from Penticton in any direction there are dozens of communities within an hour of riding, each one offering the perfect opportunity to stop for refreshments, fuel and the chance to check out the local shops for unique souvenirs.

No. 7: Heart of Canadian wine industry
With more than 170 wineries operating in the South Okanagan region, it would be nearly impossible to visit the Penticton area without being aware that it is the epicentre of the wine industry in Western Canada. Taking in the road along Naramata bench is both a great ride and a chance to pick up wine from some of the 40 wineries in just 15 kilometres. In search of a unique spot to sample some local products. Catch a shuttle to the District Wine Village where you will have an experience unlike anything else.

No. 8: Craft breweries, cideries and more
Not a fan of wine? No problem. The Penticton region is home to eight craft breweries as well as cideries and distilleries. There are also multiple cheese shops featuring locally made creations that are sure to keep you coming back. Whether you spend a day collecting samples to bring back to your hotel for evening refreshments or walk over to one of the breweries located in the downtown area, you won’t be disappointed.

No. 9: Evenings on the boardwalk
After a day of riding it is time to relax and Penticton has you covered with a boardwalk overlooking the beach and Okanagan Lake. Classic hotels, great restaurants and pubs and not a modern-day chain establishment in sight. Add in the vintage paddle wheeler on the shore and it truly is like being transported back to a simpler time, when vacations were all about enjoying the company of family and friends.

No. 10: Welcoming businesses
Travelling by motorcycle is an amazing experience but searching for parking or a place to set your gear can also be a frustrating experience. Travelling throughout the Penticton region, there is a true sense that motorcyclists are not only welcome but encouraged to come experience everything the area has to offer. Designated parking at hotels and restaurants, special meal discounts and even in-room amenities to help gear clean and dry make it obvious that this is a place where you and your motorcycle want to spend time.

Planning your next motorcycle trip? Look no further than Penticton, BC. Helping you with your motorcycle journey to Penticton, Visit Penticton has put together a comprehensive guidebook (https://www.visitpenticton.com/experience/motorcycle-touring/) outlining routes throughout the area. Come for a day, stay for a week using Penticton as your home base or anything in between, it is all waiting for you.
