The opening day of action at Motegi for the 16th event of the MotoGP World Championship, 2024 edition, saw Marc and Alex Marquez hard at work especially in the afternoon, as the morning Free Practice were affect by a few drops of rain that prevented them from lapping with consistency around the Twin Ring Motegi track.

With sun shining and higher temperatures in the afternoon, both standard bearers of Team Gresini Racing MotoGP were able to secure the direct seed to Q2, with Marc only 33 thousandths of a second away from Binder’s quickest lap and Alex eighth and less than six tenths of a second shy from the provisional pole position.

2nd – MARC MARQUEZ #93 (1’43.469s)
“I took a few risks on the final lap. We changed the bike quite a lot today as I wasn’t feeling comfortable, but we did well in the last two runs. We had a few too many issues, one with the brake… We still need to figure out how to be effective with fresh tyres. Race-wise, we’re still working on which is be the tyre to go with.”

8th – ALEX MARQUEZ #73 (1’44.0
“I’m happy to be back in Q2, even though we’re still missing something set-up wise. We need a little bit more of track time in dry conditions. We need to improve our pace and should it rain, we’ll have to take advantage of the opportunity.”
